I love this. So, in addition to being responsible for teens getting diseases and getting knocked up, Bush's crazy abstinence program is disseminating complete lies. Sure, abortion leads to suicide, but having a baby at age 13 makes you the happiest lassie in the land. And did you hear that HIV can be passed in sweat? Better stop participating in those school athletic activities; you might end up touching a sweaty body by accident. And let's not even talk about the cybex machines.
Is there no end to the idiocy of the religious right? Why is it that Sweden, for example, manages to produce intelligent people, and the US creates millions and millions of blithering idiots?

I'm tempted to write something Euro-superior, about how americans are, at heart, so hung up about sex that, other than the decadent coasts, most of the USA would just prefer to "Say No". But the truth is in England we have the highest rate of teenage pregnancy and teen abortions in all of Europe, the rates of new HIV infection in women and hetros are the highest since the 80s and the number of infertile women due to clamydia is through the roof. And the government doesn't know how to cope. We have graphic, in-your-face sex education in schools, we are obsessed as a nation with sex, we don't have a right-wing religious influence in Downing Street (I know Blair's personal beliefs but it's not affecting policy), but I'm not sure that we're in any better position than you. The end result is the same. You can't enforce abstinence, kids are always going to have sex, but how do you keep them safe. Scare tactics don't work but it seems that only the Scandinavians have managed to get it right.
But then I really don't think governments and schools should be responsible for the sex education and moral guidance of my children.
Is it just that the Scandinavians are a superior race? I'm not willing to believe that. And recently some of them have been making a hash of things. So what gives?
I personally am pretty conservative and I voted for Bush.
Anyone still reading? Okay.
I do not agree with the "religious right" I'd say, oh, approximately 99% of the time. And frankly, I think what's missing from American (and obviously from the first commenteer) British households is the teaching of personal responsibility. Real. Parenting.
. . .Just my humble opinion. That and a couple of bucks will buy you a coffee.
Of course, although the British do have the highest rate of teenage births in Europe, it still only just over half the US rates, according to this Unicef report on teen births in the world's rich nations. The report's pretty interesting, and has really nice clear summaries and charts and discussions of policy differences in the different countries.
I'm sure the relatively sensible Scandinavian attitude to sexuality has a lot to do with how few teenage births there are in Scandinavia, and also, there's not much shame attached to becoming a teenaged parent, so teenagers who do have babies do better in the long run than teenaged parents in most other countries.
Just as important, I suspect, is the fact that we don't have a big poverty problem. The wage differences aren't big in Scandinavia. It's the kids who DON'T have the good fortune to come from healthy, resourceful homes who are at the highest risk of teen pregnancy. That's not just about their parents having failed them, it's about families who are in financial and societal situations where good parenting is practically impossible. Those kids, who've not received good care themselves, are hardly in a position to be good parents to their babies either. It's a frightening circle.
