Today's New York Times

I think it's probably me, because the paper has me in such a state this morning. I mean, what is going on with the world? Where do I begin? There's an article about donors to colleges. This cracker in Naples, Florida wants not just his parents' donation to Princeton back, but all the income it earned. Why? Because his version of public service doesn't match that of the University, and his parents made the donation to further public service. Well, guess what you ignorant slob? Just because you haven't been able to earn any money in your life, doesn't mean you get to dictate the use of the money your father and mother gave a zillion years ago. You want to donate money? EARN SOME.

Then there is this. The students at Vanderbilt have their knickers in a twist because a gay student dared to run for Homecoming Queen. First of all, if those wretches can't see that Everett Moran, standing in a dress and red elbow-length gloves on the football field, personifies courage and honor, and everything else that homecoming clearly doesn't stand for, then they don't deserve to be college students. They should take their ignorant bigoted selves back to the inbred-hillbilly holes they crawled out of. And Everett, you go girl. You're exactly what this country needs.

Here's the thing. I'm am so goddamn sick of these "red-staters." This website pretty much expresses everything I feel about those cretins: www.fuckthesouth.com. As my brother wrote in the Gadflyer, if we ever dared to refer to them the way they refer to us, we'd be drawn and quartered. But you know what? We are the real Americans. Everett Moran, standing brave and resolute in the face of bigotry, is a real American. George Soros, devoting his life and his fortune to serving those less fortunate than he is, is a real American. The citizens of California who have donated their own money to support stem cell research, to compensate for the cowardice of our Taliban government, are real Americans. The rest of them? The ones that destroy the Constitution in service to their narrow-minded and zealously self-centered agendas? Those pinheads sure as hell aren't Americans. Secession. That's what we need. Let them take their scrub-farms and stipmalls and get the hell out of our country. We'll open our doors to immigrants, to the brilliant and open-minded of the world. And we'll leave them eating dirt and handling snakes.

I know this post was from forever ago and you probably don't read this, but not all of us who live in, and were born in, red states are snake-handling bigots. Some of us--probably more than you think--are liberals, activists, and 'real Americans', just like blue staters! Gasp! Hearing that the South should just fuck off and die really doesn't do a damn thing for me.

Hi ayelet,

I read your books, and have just found your blog. Enjoy your entries like i enjoy your mysteries...

but i have to agree with noracharles. i spent many growing-up years in the south, and now have spent even more in california. i love california, and prefert to live here - i like the progressive ideals, the focus on choices for women, and of course the lower humidity. ;) but i just got back from visiting my folks in the south, and i have to tell you - in general, the people i run into down there are much more friendly and courteous than here. that southern hospitality thing is not just a stereotype. you can exchange a few sentences with a complete stranger in a grocery store, without them getting worried you are going to stalk them or something. in the bay area, that's not so true.

that site you quoted is so full of hate and intolerance. it made me be ashamed to call myself a liberal anymore.

yeah, the general political climate in the south may not be as progressive. large groups of people there may vote differently than large groups out here. but there's plenty of, for example, gay sympathizers there, and plenty of gay bashers here - especially when you get out of the larger metropolitan areas here.

some of my ultra-liberal acquaintances here in the bay area started quoting the fuckthesouth website, which really alarmed me. i always considered myself a liberal growing up, and assumed californians were beyond bigotry, but one thing i learned since moving here is this; liberal californians are often quite accepting of other people's beliefs, as long as those beliefs exactly match their own. that's not exactly what i grew up believing was what being liberal meant.

i hope you just made this post on a grumpy day, god knows i have plenty of those. wish this post wasn't my first contact with you, an author whose wit and writings i so enjoy. but i must respond to anti-southern hatred propaganda.

respectfully,

mbgray

Ayelet,

I read your post and, even though I know it is old, felt an incredible urge to respond. Like noracharles and mbgray, I felt that I had to combat the sentiment that all Southerners vote staunchly Republican and hate people who aren't white, straight, and Christians. Those feelings make it harder for those of us who aren't stereotypical "Southerners." We are misunderstood by the society we have been immersed in, and we are mislabeled by those who could commiserate and understand us. It is an ugly, lonely place to be.

I live in what is referred to often as the Deep South. You cannot get much deeper than South Carolina. I cannot speak for many people in the South; I sat with frustration as I watched county after county go Bush in the November 2004 election. As much as some of us want to incite change, it is difficult. But there are small, passionate movements of dedicated people who do everything they can to change the status quo. We do not tolerate intolerance. We combat racism, sexism and religious intolerance. We support same-sex marriage. Some of us are Christian, but we would never base our vote for a political leader on our religious preferences. We are too smart for that. We know that evangelists don't make the smartest leaders, and we vote with those sentiments intact.

All we are asking is this: please don't judge all Southerners on the color of states or any other superficial marker. Some of us work hard for tolerance. Some of us care deeply about having effective leadership in our country. Some of us are Evolutionists, and some of us are even literate. Not every one of us is the Bush-praising, Bible-beating, redneck asshole we are perceived to be.

I have enjoyed reading the site.

With all due respect,
jennyblakely

Hi matey and blog buddies, enjoyed the blog most interesting. Not sure how well you are doing in driving more traffic to your blog but If you are interested in promoting your site and getting more visitors (aren't we all??) I would definitely recommend the free Link Referral Program.

I have a website featuring ebay japan amongst other stuff and after trying every seo software/program on the net I got tipped off by an IT techi mate that the Link Referral Program was the best - more importantly it's free!!

The signup process was quick and before long my hits increased dramatically. Consequently my affiliate sales commissions and business sales went through the roof PLUS my website increased in google ranking which was an added bonus!!

If you didn't need this advice then I am sorry but you did have anonymous posting enabled on your blog. If anyone else has any good ideas for driving more traffic to blogs/websites then please share with your online business blog buddies. Ta ;-)

Hi matey

I'm sure it was this blog I was reading a while back where someone was looking for an SEO tool for driving more traffic and get more hits for their website.

Anyway, I was speaking to a techi guy at work who gets to know all the latest stuff and he uses the free Link Referral Program.

His website on ppc search engine marketing placement amongst other stuff has seen traffic explode since he started using the Link Referral Program - consequently his affiliate sales commissions and business sales went through the roof PLUS his website increased in google ranking which was an added bonus!!

If anyone else has any good ideas for driving more traffic to blogs/websites then please share with your online business blog buddies. Ta ;-)

Hey there! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any trouble with hackers?
My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing months of hard work due to no back up.
Do you have any methods to prevent hackers?
